Visual Communications Emphasis

My passion for typography, design, and hand lettering began before I fully comprehended what typography and visual communication actually was and how it surrounds me daily. Through study and practice I have witnessed my personal growth and I strive to create organized layouts with comfortable and clear understanding. I am driven to compose work that contains visual space on a two-dimensional surface, allowing the elements to be seen in hierarchical scale. I push myself to use typography and other elements to establish a form that communicates a message. I enjoy working with clients to communicate their needs and wants to achieve their ultimate goal.
In reflection of my body of work, I discovered that I much enjoy hand-rendered type. I have challenged myself to draw type. In the future I desire to develop a greater skill and craft for it. I aspire to create hand lettering similar to the Texas-based designer, Sean McCabe. I want to have a greater understanding and knowledge of typography, like McCabe, I can blend, join, and layer various type classes. Many of his compositions are words stacked one above another, creating a form with the words that often portray what the words are describing.
One of the struggles I am trying to work on is creating an underlying structure that my composition rests on. Marian Bantjes is a great example, building many of her designs and patterns with solid structure. Even when her work is very fluid and natural, the lines fall on the hidden skeleton. I am pushing myself to emulate her work and desire to create designs with a combination of typography and pictures.
By viewing works from designers like McCabe and Bantjes, I am focused and determined to discover new ways to arrange information. I want my viewers to see and experience the design composition as a whole before they digest the different pieces of information.
